Trevor Paglen's work deliberately blurs lines between science, contemporary art, journalism, and other disciplines to construct unfamiliar, yet meticulously researched ways to see and interpret the world around us. He is the author of numerous books and articles on subjects including experimental geography, state secrecy, military symbology, photography, and visuality.

His midcareer retrospective, Trevor Paglen: Sites Unseen, opens this summer at the Smithsonian American Art Museum before traveling to numerous international institutions including the MCA San Diego, the Kunsthalle Wien, Austria, and the Museo Tamayo, Mexico City. His exhibition Impossible Objects will be on view at Altman Siegel, San Francisco, March 15 through May 3, 2018.
His work has appeared in The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, The New Yorker, Artforum, Frieze, The Atlantic, Bomb, October, Wired and The New Inquiry in addition to many other publications. Paglen has received grants and awards from the Smithsonian, Art Matters, Artadia, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the LUMA foundation, the Eyebeam Center for Art and Technology, and the Aperture Foundation. He was recently named a 2017 MacArthur Fellow. He is represented by Altman Siegel, San Francisco and Metro Pictures, New York. He holds a B.A. from U.C. Berkeley, an M.F.A. from the Art Institute of Chicago, and a Ph.D. in Geography from U.C. Berkeley.
About the Larry Sultan Visiting Artist Program
A free, public lecture series, the program pays tribute to the renowned photographic artist and longtime CCA faculty member Larry Sultan, who passed away in 2009. Each year this series brings to campus prominent photographers and artists working in photography-related media to give public presentations, critique student work, and participate in events and projects.
The Larry Sultan Visiting Artist Program is copresented by California College of the Arts, Pier 24 Photography, and SFMOMA.
