Join us for a free day of activities and events exploring identity – who we think we are, how we think the world sees us and how we can reveal our true selves. All day, young people may participate in a hands-on workshop creating headdresses and/or masks. Once finished, you can try on your creation and have your picture taken, both with the headdress/mask and without.

Make a mask or a headdress
A hands on workshop to create headdresses/masks which young people will, upon finishing, have their pictures taken with and without and
suitable for sharing on social media platforms. A variety of artists will encourage makers to create something that either speaks to hidden identities or serves to transform them. The photos will help emphasize the ways in which wearable art such as headdresses and masks can change or reveal the person wearing them.

In the SFArtsED space on the second floor at Minnesota Street Project, viewers can enjoy an exhibit of work by students in SFArtsED Summer visual arts classes led by artist Richard Olsen. Their work will explore notions of identity in a variety of media. Student artists whose work is being show will be on hand to discuss their creations.

Experience a fashion forward flash
Several times throughout the day, student designers will exhibit wearable art they created with artist Tiersa Nureyev in SFArtsED Summer’s Fashion camp. The fashion show will take place in the atrium and then lead viewers to the SFArtsED space, where they will pose in “tableau vivant” style so their fashions can be examined more closely.
