1150 25th St / Adrian Rosenfeld Gallery

Adrian Rosenfeld is pleased to announce the opening of Josh Brand & Ruth Laskey, a collaboration with Herald St, London, and Ratio 3, San Francisco. Working respectively with the materials of analogue photography and hand-dyed thread, Brand and Laskey play with a range of conceptual incongruities. They each use historic materials and art-making techniques to expand upon the visual languages of 20th-century modernism. They both depend on mechanical devices to make images that are nonetheless insistently handmade. They both plan meticulously, but also embrace surprise and a lack of complete foresight. Brand’s and Laskey’s images result from a productive tension between the control born of mastering a craft and the fortuitousness of the creative process.
Brand lives and works in New York City. His work has appeared at the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Art Gallery of Ontario, and the Museum of Contemporary Photography, Chicago. His images have been acquired by the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, and Dallas Museum of Art. Laskey is based in San Francisco. She has been featured in exhibitions at the Wexner Center for the Arts, the ICA Boston, and BAMPFA, among other spaces. Her work is in the collections of SFMOMA, BAMPFA, and the Hammer Museum.
