Artist Talk: Close to Home: On Love & Money in the Bay Area Art Scene

Join photographer Andy Freeberg, in conversation with Stephanie Breitbard (art consultant), Shannon Jackson (Cal Berkeley Hadidi Professor of Rhetoric & of Theatre, Dance, and Performance Studies), Dr. Natasha Boas (independent curator, writer and Bay Area cultural critic), and Jack Fischer (gallery owner).  *An opening reception follows the artist talk.

Presented by Jack Fischer Gallery in conjunction with the opening of Andy Freeberg’s exhibition, Advisor, this free event will explore the changing dynamics of the Bay Area arts scene. What is the relation, if any, between the tech sector and the art sector? How do concepts of “the market” propel and limit the cultural life of the Bay Area? At a time of critical reflection on the Bay Area’s place in a national and international art world, we will consider the dynamics that threaten to define the region, as well as those that we would like to define us. Along the way, Freeberg’s photography inspires institutional reflection on art, money, and community, mixing irony and compassion with equal measure.
