Dolby Gallery in collaboration with Minnesota Street Project presents a selection of generative and interactive artworks by Chicago-based experiential design studio Leviathan and Purin Phanichphant, an inaugural facility artist of the Minnesota Street Project’s Artist Studio Program.

Employing newly developed coding techniques, Leviathan’s Metamorphosis extracts brilliant color data from masterpieces of the past century to create a new experience of art. The generative visuals, which are set rhythmically to a composed ambient soundscape, evolve through time and space– creating an immersive, meditative experience. Rich color volume data, inspired by the dramatic imaging of Dolby Vision HDR, is brought to life along with a sonic experience rendered in the breakthrough sound of Dolby Atmos.

Inspired by the concept of serious play and its link to creativity, Phanichphant’s Instant Wallpaper Generator is a simple and interactive installation welcoming audience members to participate in the creation of generative visuals. Participants manipulate 2D geometric shapes, construction paper, and found objects to create their own designs which are replicated and magnified on the wall projection by using a webcam to capture live video, a simple code written in Processing, and a short-throw projector.

This exhibition coincides with the launch of Leviathan’s custom designed immersive audiovisual commission currently on view at Dolby Gallery within Dolby headquarters at 1275 Market Street. Also, on view are interactive artworks by Purin Phanichphant.

A San Francisco-based artist and designer, Purin Phanichphant holds an MFA in Product Design from Stanford University. Phanichphant’s interactive objects and installations engage audiences while exploring authenticity, expressiveness, and co-creation. He has worked as a principal product designer at IDEO San Francisco and taught design courses at Stanford University, General Assembly, and UC Berkeley. Learn more at purin.co.
