Eleanor Harwood Gallery is pleased to present Dream House, a continuation of the exhibition Cut From the Left, which originally exhibited February through March of 2017 at tmoro projects, an exhibition space run by artist and educator Takeshi Moro. The group exhibition by Rebekah Goldstein, Dana Hemenway, and Mayuko Kono negotiates the tensions between color, form, and the fragmentation of the familiar.

Goldstein’s paintings depict imagined structures and spaces that rely on and create their own internal logic. Her sculptures – created as if plucked from the paintings into real time and space, assert a dialogue between imagined and actualized form.

Hemenway’s work continues her investigation of extension cords as aesthetically manipulated objects by using handcrafted ceramics as a substrate to weave prefabricated extension cords. Over the past three years Hemenway has employed craft techniques using extension cords, to elevate and transform the object’s value beyond the scope of its functionality.

Kono’s sculpture are made of found metal racks and paper mache. Her manipulations of the racks playfully soften and disrupt their inherent rigidity and repetition, creating new forms that are reminiscent of architectural models.

An essay was commissioned by Maggie Haas for the original tmoro projects exhibition, the Eleanor Harwood Gallery presentation takes its title from Haas’ essay.

Rebekah Goldstein lives and works in San Francisco. She received an MFA from California College of the Arts in 2012, and a BA from Sarah Lawrence College in 2004. Her work has been exhibited locally and nationally, including a recent solo exhibition at CULT | Aimee Friberg Exhibitions (San Francisco, CA). Goldstein has been awarded residencies at the Sam and Adele Golden Center for the Arts, the Atlantic Center for the Arts, and the Arad Arts Project.  Goldstein is a charter resident at the Minnesota Street Project Studio Program (San Francisco, CA). Her work is part of the permanent collection of the Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive, as well private collections throughout the Bay Area.

Dana Hemenway is an artist based in San Francisco, CA. She received her MFA from Mills College. She has had residencies at the Bemis Center for Contemporary Art (Omaha, NE), The Wassaic Project (Upstate New York), Root Division (San Francisco, CA), and is a charter resident of the Minnesota Street Project’s Studio Program (San Francisco, CA). Dana has exhibited her artwork locally, nationally, and internationally, including a solo exhibition at Eleanor Harwood Gallery in 2016. Dana is currently a co-director at Royal Nonesuch Gallery, an artist-run project space in Oakland and is represented by Eleanor Harwood Gallery in San Francisco.

Mayuko Kono was born in Japan and currently lives and works in Los Angeles, CA. She received a BFA from Milwaukee Institute of Art & Design in 2005 and an MFA from Pennsylvania State University in 2011. She was an Artist in Residence at Headlands Center for the Arts in 2014. Her work has been exhibited in the U.S. and Japan.
