1275 Minnesota St / Municipal Bonds

Municipal Bonds is pleased to announce our first presentation of the London-based Argentinian artist Sofía Clausse. On view May 3–June 24, Sofía Clausse: Labyrinth will mark the artist’s debut solo exhibition in the US. Join us for the Artist Reception on Saturday, May 6, from 5 to 7pm.

Through her recent paintings and works on paper, Clausse creates a dynamic visual universe that explores the interconnections of elements, materials, symbols, and thoughts. At the heart of the exhibition is a wall diagram that seeks to explore information—not explain. Words are joined through lines, knotting themselves together into a linguistic mesh. Like a net cast into a sea of words, the diagram gathers works that are made of other lines, creating a repetition and circular process that is central to Clausse's practice.

Clausse's methodology is rooted in her own tools and materials, which she creates and studies to understand their unique behavior and mark-making. She develops systems and structures that generate new work from previous pieces, establishing a cyclical production model. This approach makes the oeuvre into an ouroboros, an ancient symbol of infinity and self-renewal, continuously expanding as it regenerates from itself.

Inspired by the history of Latin American weaving and concrete poetry, Clausse's work explores the dualism between text and textile, tangible and intangible, literal and abstract. The line is the constant unit in the works, binding all together and generating connections. Lines become thread, become text, or become paths—which loop and knot into a Borgean labyrinth—exploring what it means to belong while ever changing.
