1275 Minnesota St / INSTITUTE OF ADVANCED UNCERTAINTY / GALLERY 200

Artist Reception:  August 3rd | 6pm – 8pm

INSTITUTE OF advanced  UNCERTAINTY is pleased to present Tableaux / Motion and Stillness, a solo exhibition of paintings by Cappy Coates.

The lure of the photograph - its capture of motion and stillness – the paradox of the freeze frame – from these underpinnings of photography, the paintings of Cappy Coates explore different perspectives of seeing –  in sequences, in combinations, in solitary images.

“From the intimacy of small gestures to the expanse of imagined landscapes and from street scenes to still lives, what I see most vividly is the visible eloquence of everyday life, its patterns, its colors, its resonances is what engages me to paint.” --Cappy Coates

Born in the countryside outside of Chicago, Cappy Coates came West to attend Mills College and UC Berkeley. The act of painting came after years of working in educational publishing where photography and graphic design had already been part of her life. Collaborating with documentary filmmaking friends on archival research and title paintings helped her develop a stronger focus  on her own creative activity and launched her ardent love  of painting and its material qualities. She gives special thanks to her mentors, artists Mel Prest and Dickson Schneider. This is her first solo exhibition.

INSTITUTE OF advanced UNCERTAINTY is a program of Five Arts Foundation, a 501(c)(3) based in San Francisco.

Gallery hours: Tuesdays through Saturdays, 12:30pm to 5:30pm, or by appointment.
