For this special Third Saturday in January we’re thrilled to welcome Tongva artist Katie Dorame who recently illustrated the children’s book Toypurina: Japchivit Leader, Medicine Woman, Tongva Rebel, written by Cheyenne M. Stone and Glenda Armand. Fed up with the oppression of Spanish colonization, the medicine woman Toypurina led a daring revolt against the San Gabriel Mission in California on October 25, 1785. This captivating book sheds light on the story of a remarkable yet often overlooked Indigenous leader, celebrating her bravery and resilience. The event will feature Katie’s original illustrations, alongside a conversation with and reading from the book by the artist.

Books will be available to purchase and this event is FREE for all ages!
