Chandler Gallery is pleased to present Flora + Fauna,
a group exhibition at Minnesota Street Project.

Flora + Fauna brings together work by seventeen artists: Mari Andrews, Gale Antokal, Shannon Belardi, Patrick Berran, Paola Bignù, Renée Bott, Tiffany Bozic, Squeak Carnwath, Mary Chasen, Jamie Emerick, Gianluca Franzese, Lachlan Hinwood, Haley Mellin, Lekah Singh, Ryan Steadman, Nicole Wittenberg, and Adam Wolpert. These artists share a subject as old as the impulse to make an image at all: the natural world, and our long attempt to see it clearly, not just with the eyes, but through attention and investigation. In their hands, that seeing becomes a kind of storytelling

These works span a wide range of approaches to that same project. Some are scientific in approaching their subjects, precise and observational, nodding to the traditions of natural
history illustration. Others are more symbolic or spiritual, and use abstraction as their primary language to engage with the natural world. Some artists construct their works from natural materials themselves: leaves, plant fiber, earth. Others work figuratively, directly from the landscape, returning to the same places across seasons, or treat it as psychological terrain and a way to recount the stories of human discovery. Many works, directly or indirectly, address what happens when the human hand inevitably intervenes, tracing the ways human presence shapes, disrupts, and transforms the living world around us.

What connects the works is a human eye that is curious, reverent, and inextricably implicated. These artists are not outside nature looking in; they are part of it, and their work reflects this entanglement. Whether rendered with scientific precision or pulsing abstraction, with admiration or a quiet unease, the plants and animals in the exhibition are not merely subjects. They are interlocutors: the things we look at in order to better understand ourselves, and where we stand in the vastness of it all.

A portion of the proceeds of this exhibition will be donated by the artists and the gallery to Art into Acres to support land conservation in memory of artist and mentor Jane Rosen. Art into Acres is an artist-run, non-profit environmental initiative. Founded in 2017 by Haley Mellin, the nonprofit supports large-scale land conservation with a focus on climate, Indigenous peoples and beta-diversity. The lands protected are large, intact, and ecologically significant. They become new National Parks, Indigenous Protected Areas, and wildlife migration corridors that support species reproduction, movement and adaptation. Every project is locally requested and community- or Indigenous-led.
