Reception: November 2nd | 5pm–7pm

Jack Fischer Gallery is pleased to announce our upcoming exhibition oil, pastel, metal, a solo show of new & older work by Jay Kelly.

In this exhibition, we will be showing Kelly’s well-known small-scale sculptures and drawings alongside a newly executed series of paintings. The sculptures, that at times reference biomorphic shapes, are built from metal, wood, paint, and Japanese paper. The drawings, which consist of graphite, pastel and colored pencil on vellum, echo the sculptures in their lightness of form, proportion, and color. The most recent work, a series of small oil paintings on linen, complements both Kelly’s sculptures and drawings in surprising ways; they seem to be feeding off each other into a full harmonizing set.

A self-taught artist from Pasadena, California, he began his career as a photorealist painter, shifting his focus to pure abstraction in the late 1990s. Jay Kelly's work can be found in the collections of The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, NY; The British Museum, London, England; The Brooklyn Museum, Brooklyn, New York, NY; The San Diego Museum of Art, San Diego, CA; Yale University Art Museum, New Haven, CT; and private and public collections.
