Laura Hapka: Primary Process

For the winter 2021 season, Themes+Projects Gallery presents Primary Process by Laura Hapka. This exhibition contains 16 new works. A majority of them are acrylic and encaustic on linen panel and a couple others are installation pieces. For this work, Laura experiments with using tone-ontone primary colors: 2 reds, 2 yellows, 2 blues. Upon closer inspection, one will see that meticulous thought placed into the application of the paint, rendering gorgeous textures in the piece. The titles for the paintings are playful in nature, like Blue Wave, Primary Report; referring to the time of their creation—the American political primaries of late 2019 and early 2020.

About the Artist

Laura Hapka is a self-taught artist, with undergraduate degrees in Landscape Architecture and Environmental Design and a Masters of Business Administration. She lives and works in Oakland, CA. Her work has evolved through experimentation, trial and error, and, correspondingly, the body of work in her Process series is not about individual paintings but about how she arrived at the body of work. She is driven to create work that is pure and aesthetically beautiful.
