Randy Hayes, "Diagonal #1," 2022. Oil on photographs on paper, push pins, 45 x 50 in.

1275 Minnesota St / Themes + Projects

For their next exhibition, Themes+Projects gallery presents Eccentric Branches by Randy Hayes. Inspiration for this new body or work stemmed during the pandemic lockdown of spring 2020. During this time of isolation, Randy had more time to observe the beauty found in the Little Gem magnolias that grew in his backyard and Grandiflora magnolias found at the Overton Park in Memphis. In this new series, Randy continues his tradition of painting directly onto his photographs and either pinning them directly to the gallery walls or mounting them to canvas. Inspired by the real-life length of the magnolia branches, pieces range in size from 12 x 48 inches to 77 x 100 inches.

A native of Mississippi and a graduate of the Memphis College of Art, Randy Hayes spent several years in Boston as a freelance scenic artist working for the PBS television station WGBH. In 1976 he moved to Seattle where he spent most of his career. In 2013, Hayes established a new studio in Mississippi. He has received awards from the Tacoma and Seattle Art Museums, and the Flintridge Foundation in Pasadena. He is a past recipient of the Visual Arts Award given by the Mississippi Institute of Arts and Letters. His work is included in numerous public and private collections, including the Museum of Contemporary Photography in Chicago, The Mississippi Museum of Art, and the United States Department of State. Museums that have exhibited his work include the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and the New Museum of Contemporary Art in New York.

Eccentric Branches is Randy’s second exhibition at Themes+Projects gallery.
