Hashimoto Contemporary is excited to announce What Doesn’t Kill You, a solo exhibition by Toronto-based painter Megan Ellen MacDonald. This will be MacDonald’s third solo exhibition at Hashimoto Contemporary, and debut presentation at our Minnesota Street location.

MacDonald’s compositions feature soft contours and peachy hues that traditionally evoke a sense of vulnerability. Yet, in this new series, her subjects—porcelain figurines and vibrant, glossy fruits—subvert these expectations. They bare their teeth, oscillating between dominance and passivity, tenderness and cruelty. Forms are rendered both soft and sharp at once - porcelain, jelly, and metal become indistinguishable at times. This tension reflects the paradoxes inherent in feminine identity, where cuteness, often an aestheticization of powerlessness, becomes a site of both allure and unease.
