Binta Ayofemi

Binta Ayofemi’s practice engages urban spaces and the commons as a material and is inspired by the Shakers and other rehearsals of utopian form.
Her practice explores urban space, the Underground Railroad, pop music, pattern language, and other early forms of software. Ayofemi's work investigates themes of vacancy, abundance and latent systems.

The artist often works in scores, including an upcoming series of urban landscapes in vacant lots found in Oakland and Chicago. Upcoming works include a Black Panther Garden, an urban farm, and a general store. Ayofemi has performed her work at Berkeley Art Museum and at Theaster Gates’ Huguenot House at Documenta 13. Ayofemi has presented her work at the Kadist Art Foundation, SFMOMA, Southern Exposure, The Carpenter Center, The Wattis Institute, the Asian Art Museum, and Chicago’s Rebuild Foundation.
