1275 Minnesota St / Et al. etc.

Reception: Saturday, October 1st |  6pm - 8pm

Et al. etc. is pleased to present SAVAGE CURIO, a two-person exhibition with work by Spencer Lewis and Eamon Ore-Giron.

The work consists of a support structure, a main rectilinear surface, and a pattern of painted embellishments. In one, a series of geometric shapes inhabit the field, each flatly colored; there are two surfaces here, painted and unpainted, raw. In the other the marks remain first and foremost marked, strokes only disassociated from their brushed origin by an intense layering. In both, the plane is inhabited in a true sense – there is no illusion, no escapist tendency towards an implied infinity. Rather, the crisp shapes or rough marks dash across the field; each builds a rhythm, an overall sense of itself as a painting, an object. The pictures are a negotiation between their labors and their site – raw linen is given its space in one; the stretcher and edges are acknowledged in the other. Eamon Ore-Giron’s works call to mind countless exterior references while never satisfyingly settling into a single vernacular, happy with their own ever-growning language. Spencer Lewis allows works a bold, bareness; some jut out from the wall, becoming free standing things, still paintings if only just so.
