Benjamin Vilmain
Benjamin Vilmain is a multidisciplinary artist working in sculpture, painting and sound. His practice draws from his experiences growing up in Iowa going to carnivals, county fairs and parades. He mixes these often colorful and garish aesthetics of cheap prizes, cakes and homemade games with inspiration from the local urban landscape and surrounding environment. An incessant photographer and collector, Vilmain draws from the Bay Area's unique mixture of marine life, forested landscape and urban development/decay - to create wiggly corporeal abstractions full of childlike whimsy and interdimensional possibility. Ben also experiments with sound, looping vocal tracks and ambient field recordings as TIS ' KID and through the collaborative project i.e.
Vilmain’s exhibition and performance history includes Incline Gallery, Land and Sea, Yerba Buena Center For The Arts, Berkeley Art Museum, Alter Space, The Center For Contemporary Art Sacramento, Jack Hanley Gallery, Southern Exposure, Wattis Institute for Contemporary Art, The Luggage Store (Renoir Hotel), We Are Will Brown, and Liminal Space, Oakland, CA.
